Latest News: Recent Deaths
March, 2008

Deepest Sympathies are extended to the family of Jackie Hood, NCBA member who passed away after a brief illness. Her daughter, Katie, wrote,

"My mom (was) an amazing woman..My family and I thank you for all your prayers and best wishes during the past 2 weeks and also for your friendship to her. Please raise a glass of wine to celebrate her life and toast her on her way."

We extend our sympathies to the family of Ellen Flowers of Rochester, New York, who passed away suddenly on January 21st of this year. Ellen and her sister, Gail Hatz, also from Rochester, were scheduled to attend the NCBA Convention in March.

Eleanor Bennett, a former NCBA member, passed away in October 2006, according to her granddaughter, Holly Sowinski. Eleanor, who was married to the late James Bennett, had just recently become a great grandmother to Holly's new baby girl, Savannah Lynn. She was 69. We have been unable to determine if Eleanor was a member of a local guild. If you are able to add some information about her basketry affiliations, please let us know.

The NCBA family extends deepest sympathies to Barbara Saulnier, whose husband, John, died in a car accident. Barbara is a member of Port City Basketmakers and NCBA.

Carol Scherer of Largo, FL, shown here with her husband William at the 2006 Convention in March, passed away on April 26. Carol's relatively newfound passion for basketry was matched only by her longtime passion and great talent for decorative painting. She painted the teacher name tags for the 2003 convention, as well as many decorative basket embellishments once people "discovered" her. Carol was a lovely lady whose warmth and loving smile will be missed by her family, her friends, and anyone who sat near her in a basketry class.
Jim Rutherford Passes
Jim Rutherford passed away Saturday, Oct. 29, at his home. He was at work (Royalwood) most of the day that Saturday, playing with our shop cat, laughing, answering the phone, and packing orders. After lunch he complained of stomach pains and went home a little early. He died of a massive heart attack sometime late Saturday afternoon/early evening. He was found Monday morning, sitting in his favorite "fluffy" chair.

His passing has opened a very large hole in the Royalwood Family, one that will never be completely filled. We will miss him greatly, as will the Basketry World. For those of you who would like to send condolences to Jim's sister, Pat, her address is:
Pat Spreng
2840 St. Rt. 60
Loudonvile, Ohio 44842
Many of you know her, as she enjoyed accompanying him to conventions as his "vendor assistant".

Jim would have wanted everyone to celebrate his life by making baskets, laughing, and enjoying friends. A group of us spent time after his memorial service enjoying lunch at one of "our" favorite restaurants and taking a ride on the carousel. He would have liked that. . . . .

Alvin Wood Passes

The world has lost a true individual. For those of us who remember his warm smile, his "Bark Berry Buckets", his fun-loving personality, his devotion to Trevle and their girls, we have lost a really special man. Travel safely Alvin Wood, you will be missed.

With great sadness, we report that Denise Carlson passed away Thursday, September 1, 2005. She was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig's disease, several years ago. A true fighter, Denise used every weapon she had, including her dazzling sense of humor and her amazing courage, to try to hang on long enough to "dance at [her] grandsons' weddings."

Denise was a fine basket maker; she was especially gifted at ribbed basket construction. She served on the NCBA Board of Directors, was Coordinator of the 2001Convention, and was a mainstay of the Goldweavers, her local guild.

Denise will be be missed by her many friends within and outside of the basket making community. We offer our deepest sympathy to her husband, David, and to the rest of her family.

Dear NCBA,

I am writing in response to the recent sponsorship I received from the NCBA for the "Walk to D'Feet ALS" (otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's disease). I am deeply moved by this contribution. I know that recently NCBA lost one of its beloved members, Denise Carlson, to this debilitating disease. I too have seen the effects this disease can have on precious loved ones. With this disease it is difficult to ease the burden, the hardships, or the pain felt by the inflicted loved one and their family members. I wanted to help win the battle against this disease by "Walking to D'Feet ALS" in Emerald Isle on September 9th, 2005. You in turn have helped also by your gracious contribution. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Sherry Simmons
